Again within 5 days there has been another concussion in the Majors. This time the incident was due to a pitch to the helmet, the victim was David Freese of the St. Louis Cardinals. Although Freese has not been officially put on the 7-day DL, the reports at that he sustained a concussion (although they called it a “mild” concussion, when are they going to stop with that terminology?).
SB Nation has the report on this incident including the video of the pitch/incident. If Freese goes on the 7-day DL, or is listed with a concussion he will become the eighth player with such a distinction;
- Erick Almonte
- Chris Dickerson
- Brian Roberts
- Denard Span
- Ronny Cedeno
- Craig Gentry
- Matt Treanor
- David Freese
I will also say DO NOT be surprised if he is initially listed with a “head contusion”. Reminder that the league average for concussions since 2000 is 3.67…
On the broadcast last night, they were saying “mild concussion” and “contusion” is what the organization was reporting. Freese stated that he couldn’t see for a few seconds after it happened. Hopefully they do the right thing and put him on the DL.
Broadcast tonight is saying that the Cardinals expect Freese to be back on Tuesday night. They have so-far elected not to put him on the DL. His “Grade 1” concussion appeared to have improved although they said he complained of being “cloudy” this morning.
It really surprises me that the Cardinals have elected not to put him on the 7-day DL.. That means they are playing this weekend with only 23 players available since Molina is suspended..
