Footy Concussion Report Round 8

The Concussion Blog is now tracking the concussions of another collision sport, one with very good media coverage, albeit not in North America.  Aussie Rules Football and its professional league AFL have had an issue with concussion in the past and as we have seen on videos here, they can be scary.  With the help of Sportal we will be compiling the concussions on a weekly basis.

It has been about 5 weeks since we updated this list; reason being one could not find any information on concussions in the AFL.  Personally speaking, while watching the games there have been multiple incidences of players being taken off the field, or staggering around after a hit; yet no concussion report.

In fact, after I sent out multiple emails down under for some help in finding this information; the “Superfooty” coverage of injuries changed.  Prior to my inquiries the player was listed followed by the injury and then estimated time of return.  After repeated emails about my need of some assistance the “Superfooty” coverage just listed the player’s name without any injury next to the player.  Thankfully I tripped across Sportal’s website for AFL injuries, as they still list the players and injuries.  I have even reached out via Twitter to many of the wonderful sources that cover the AFL, yet NOTHING.  I am not speaking about the past week.  I am speaking about 8 weeks of attempts to get information; is the entire establishment covering up AFL concussions?  Perhaps the knowledge about concussions is not at the level it is in North America?  Regardless it has been a bear to try to find information about concussions that occur in this collision sport.

I do have a less “conspiracy” more realistic explanation as well; players may be getting a concussion on match night but are returning to play by the following week and are not listed by any source because of this.  Occam’s Razor.

After the rant and information here is the most recent AFL concussion statistics;

  • 8 Rounds (weeks)
  • 11 Reported concussions
  • 1.4 Concussions/Round
  • Currently 2.94% of active roster in the AFL is concussed

We hope to get more information as the season progresses, and if anyone has contacts down under can you pass that along to us?
