Dan Gorman, director of athletic training at the University of Mount Union in Ohio, was killed in a bus accident last night. He was in a bus that was transporting the wrestling team along with support staff, including student athletic trainers, which was involved in a crash with a Ohio Department of Transportation plow.
Gorman came to Mount Union in 1985, the school said, and was “integral to the success of the university’s athletic training program.” Mount Union said it was making counselors and the university chaplain available to members of the campus community.
Many athletic trainers are on the road at any given time in the college ranks, and at the lower divisions of the NCAA their duties can even include driving (not reported in this instance). Accidents happen and this is a tragic situation, I want to send out condolences from The Concussion Blog to a fallen athletic trainer.
