On Sunday during the US Army All-American Bowl where the nation’s top high school football players will be showing off, there will be something new strapped to them. A concussion detection device, called a “concussion indicator”.
Inside the chinstrap is software that will register the force and duration of a hit. Outside the strap is a light indicator. Green means you are fine, yellow means you have a 51% chance of a concussion, blue 70% and red 90%…
The CEO of Battle Sports Science says that anytime the indicator light is other than green the player should be removed and subjected to further examination by medical staff.
EDIT/UPDATE: Although it was titled a “concussion detection device” there is nothing that will detect a concussion other than a proper evaluation performed by a medical provider with extensive training.
This particular device is a wonderful tool for identifying when the head region has sustained an acceleration/deceleration consistent with the HIC’s scale model that suggests possible head trauma/concussion. This is just another TOOL in the toolbox for identifying and managing concussions.
I will even go as far to say this device is a cost effective way to get questionable hits/situations looked at by an athletic trainer or doctor.
Hi there,
Is there a product or company that you could refer me to, that deals with concussion detection devices. I live in Canada, and would love to sell these products to the many hockey leagues that need these devises.
Contact Battle Sport Science… I believe they are working on a hockey version…
