Worth Your Time – Malcolm Gladwell

21 Feb

If you are anywhere near me you might find some time on your hands waiting out the winter weather.  If you are not near me, you should find some time to sit and watch Malcom Gladwell talk about football.  Below is his speech from the University of Pennsylvania on Valentines Day.

    Dustin,

Our friend,Malcolm Gladwell — Has pointed to the style of things heard over the years..some very similar to statements around football… ” No helmet can be made concussion proof” ..!

NFL recently gathered helmet manufactures and they all got there chance to say it for the record…Yes all attending agreed… fact – proof — no more to be done -“No helmet can be made concussion proof” case closed…!

Those statements now on record, might soon be read in courtrooms , by sharp lawyers from the NFL.

After that gathering , one manufacturer mentioned, how welcome he felt this year.. so different from past meetings ……?

Malcolm Gladwell, draws a similar image of Coal Co. statements that delayed safety measures for fifty years…

So- Yes..even design progress in helmets that could reduce brain injuries in football 90%…eliminating nine out of ten concussions ,,,,and taming all those “on line hits” would not be a ” Concussion proof helmet”…….!
    What’s important – there would be….LESS CONCUSSIONS…!

And the game of football, which is not going away , could become safer…with all sports benefiting from that headgear design progress.

With new technology recognizing our concussion issues ,, we should not freeze up , but use technology, new innovative concepts …and design to those problems.

    Dustin, Thanks again- great post..!

A great, great speech by Malcolm Gladwell. Some things I disagree with, while other points he makes are quite good. In any case, like The Concussion Blog says, it’s worth your time. Check it out.

This is a great presentation by a brilliant man. He provides great insight into the biggest debate in history. We have shared this video on our Twitter account and we hope that many people will view it and consider the big question in this presentation… How Much More Proof Do We Really Need?
